Send Claude a screenshot instead of explaining, explained by monkey

comment: SCREENSHOT

Trying to describe what's wrong on your screen takes a giant paragraph, and Claude still has to guess. A screenshot shows it all at once. Here are the exact words to send with it, a few examples to copy, and the one thing to watch for.

When something looks wrong, a button in a weird spot, colours that clash, an error popping up, the natural move is to type out what you see. It turns into a long paragraph, and it still leaves Claude guessing which button, which colour, which error. You end up going back and forth.

Claude can look at pictures. You can paste a screenshot straight into the chat (or drag it in, or upload it like a file), and Claude sees exactly what you see. Anthropic's own help page says it simply: "You can also copy images and paste them from your clipboard into Claude."

How to do it

  • Take a screenshot. On a Mac press Cmd + Shift + 4 and drag over the area. On Windows press Windows + Shift + S. On a phone, press the side button and volume up together.
  • Paste it into the Claude chat, or drag the image in, or tap the + button to upload it.
  • Add one short sentence saying what you want, then send.

The words to send with it

Paste your screenshot, then add this underneath:

say this to Claude:
Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing. Tell me everything that looks wrong or confusing in it, in plain words, and then tell me how to fix each thing step by step.

Examples to copy

  • A website that looks off: "This is my website on my phone. Something looks broken. What's wrong with it, and what should I change?"
  • An error message: "I got this error when I tried to pay my bill online. What does it mean and what should I do next?"
  • A design you like: "I love how this page looks. Describe the style, colours and layout so I can make mine feel like this."
  • A confusing screen or form: "I don't understand this settings page. Which option should I pick if I just want [what you want]?"
  • Before and after: paste two screenshots and ask "What changed between these two, and is the second one better?"

When it helps

Any time the problem is something you can see: how a page looks, an error popup, a chart, a form, a receipt, a menu you can't figure out. Skip it when the problem is only words, like fixing the spelling in an email. Just paste the text.

The one gotcha

Send a clear, full-size screenshot. Anthropic's docs say Claude can make mistakes reading low-quality, rotated or very small images, and that any text in the picture should be easy to read. Don't crop it down to a tiny corner, don't send a blurry photo of your screen taken with another phone, and if the error text is small, zoom in before you screenshot.
